Norcross homes

Steel doors by the dock, glass doors on the highway, and a few with a hundred years on them.

Most of Norcross's commercial doors are in its industrial parks: the light manufacturing, distribution and service buildings off Best Friend Road and Oakbrook Parkway. These buildings are hard on doors. Personnel doors beside the docks take a beating from dock traffic and forklifts, the frames rust where they meet the slab, and an exit door that has been chained or wedged for convenience is a citation waiting for the next inspection. The usual work is steel doors and frames, exit devices that lock from outside without trapping anyone inside, and a key system that stops every supervisor from carrying a different ring.

The apartment communities along Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Beaver Ruin Road and Indian Trail Road are another large share. Managers there deal with the same doors at scale: unit entry doors that have been kicked or pried, deadbolts that need rekeying at every turnover, laundry and maintenance rooms with steel doors that never quite close, and fire-rated breezeway doors that need their closers and labels kept right. A turnover rekey that leaves a chart behind makes the next one a single cylinder, and a master system lets maintenance carry one key.

Downtown Norcross is the old railroad town, laid out along the tracks in the 1870s, with South Peachtree Street, Thrasher Park and Lillian Webb Park at its center and some of the older houses in Gwinnett on the streets around it. Those houses have tall wood doors, old mortise locks and frames that have moved over a century. The work there is careful rather than quick: repairing or fitting a door to an old opening, adding a deadbolt without ruining the door, and keeping the look the street is known for.

Between the two, the subdivisions south and east of downtown, off Beaver Ruin Road and Indian Trail Road, date mostly from the 1960s to the 80s, and they bring the familiar residential calls: an entry door past its best, a rekey after a move, a keypad deadbolt, a camera over the driveway.

Good to know

What Norcross customers ask us.

Your question is not here? Call (470) 691-8439 and put it to the crew directly.

Our exit door keeps getting chained at night. What can we do instead?

Fit an exit device that locks from outside and opens from inside with one push, and add an exit alarm, or a delayed-egress device where the code allows one, if the worry is people leaving through it. A chained exit is a fire-code violation.

We manage an apartment community. Can you rekey units at turnover?

Yes, unit by unit as they turn over or the whole community onto a master key system, with a key chart we keep so the next turnover is a single cylinder.

Our house is in the historic district. Can you put a deadbolt on the original door?

Usually, yes, placed and sized so it does not weaken the stile or spoil the look of the door. If the old mortise lock still works, it can often be serviced and kept beside the new deadbolt.

The steel door beside our dock is rusted at the bottom. Can the frame stay?

If the frame is sound and still anchored at the slab, a new door is hung in it. If the frame has rusted through at the base, it is replaced too, and we tell you which on the walkthrough.
