What we do
A garage door is the heaviest moving thing in most houses, and the springs carry almost all of that weight, not the opener. Most garage door calls are a spring, a cable or a door that was never balanced. We fix the cause, then set the opener to the door.
Torsion springs above the door and extension springs along the tracks, replaced in pairs where the door has two and wound to the weight of your door, not a guess.
Frayed or snapped lift cables, worn or noisy rollers, cracked hinges and loose end bearings replaced, so the door rides the track instead of dragging on it.
A door that came off its track or runs crooked, reset and the tracks straightened or replaced, with the cause found first so it does not happen again next week.
Chain, belt and wall-mount openers installed or replaced, the travel and force set to the door, and the safety sensors aligned and tested.
Single and double sectional doors in steel, insulated steel and other finishes, measured to the opening and installed with new springs, tracks and weatherstrip.

How we work
A broken spring is usually a spring that reached the end of its life, but a snapped cable or an off-track door usually has a cause: a bent track, a worn roller, an opener pushing harder than it should. We look at the whole door before we quote, and the written estimate says what we found and what we are replacing.
With the opener disconnected, a balanced door stays where you leave it halfway up. A door that falls or rises on its own is wearing out the opener and the springs together. We set the spring tension to the door's weight first, then lubricate the rollers, hinges and bearings.
The opener's travel limits and force are set to the balanced door, and the safety sensors at the bottom of the tracks are aligned and tested so the door reverses when something is in its way. We leave when the door opens and closes smoothly from the wall button and the remote.

Do not try to lift it with the opener, and be careful lifting it by hand: without the spring, the door's full weight is on you and on the opener. Leave it closed if you can, keep people and cars clear of it, and call us. A broken spring is one of the most common garage door calls and is usually fixed in a single visit.
On a door with two springs, usually yes. They were installed together and have done the same number of cycles, so the second one is close to the end of its life too. Replacing both keeps the door balanced and saves a second visit. The estimate says which we recommend and why.
We recommend you do not. A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to injure someone badly, and it takes the right bars and the right procedure to release or wind it. Tightening the opener's force setting to make up for a weak spring is the other common mistake; it hides the problem and wears out the opener.
Most often the safety sensors at the bottom of the tracks are out of line, dirty or blocked, or the opener's close force or travel limit is set wrong. Sometimes it is a door that binds in the track. We check the sensors and the door's balance before we touch the opener's settings.
Yes. We measure the opening, go through the size, material, insulation and window options with you, and install the door with new springs, tracks and weatherstrip. The old door is hauled away.
