What we do

Rekeying commercial door locks, the way a business needs it.

Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock's cylinder so a new key works and every old one does not. On a business, the question is rarely one lock: it is which doors, which people, and how many keys exist afterwards.

After staff turnover

A manager or employee leaves with a key. We rekey the doors that key opened, cut new keys for the people who stay, and the key that left is useless.

New tenant or new owner

A suite, a store or a building changes hands. Every exterior door and the doors that matter inside are rekeyed the day you take possession, so no previous tenant or contractor still has a way in.

Keyed alike

Front door, back door and office on one key. We rekey the cylinders to a single key where the locks share a keyway, and swap the cylinders that do not.

Master key systems

A master for the owner, sub-masters for managers, a change key per door. We rekey to a keying schedule you approve and leave it in writing, so the next lock added fits the system.

Mortise, rim and storefront cylinders

Commercial doors use mortise cylinders, rim cylinders on exit devices, and narrow storefront cylinders as well as lever locks. We rekey all of them, so a panic bar's outside cylinder is not the one lock left on the old key.

Interchangeable cores

Where a building uses interchangeable cores, a core is swapped with a control key in seconds. We repin the cores and change them out door by door.

How we work

How a commercial rekey goes.

We list the doors and who needs which key

Before any cylinder comes out, we walk the building with you: every door that takes a key, the kind of cylinder on it, and who needs to open it. That list becomes the keying plan, and it is what the estimate prices.

We rekey the cylinders, and replace what cannot be rekeyed

Each cylinder is repinned to the new key. A cylinder that is worn, damaged, or on a keyway that cannot join the system is replaced, and that is named in the estimate rather than found on the day.

We test every door and count every key

Every rekeyed door is tried with the new key and with an old one, which must fail. Then we hand over the keys with a count, and the keying schedule for a master system, so you know exactly how many keys exist.

The quote

What a commercial rekey costs.

A commercial rekey is priced by the number of cylinders and the kind of system, not by the building. It usually costs far less than new locks.

Always included

  • A walk of every door that takes a key
  • A written estimate: cylinders to rekey and any to replace
  • Cylinders repinned to the new key or keying plan
  • Worn or incompatible cylinders replaced
  • New keys cut for the people who need them
  • Every door tested with the new key and an old one
  • Key count and keying schedule handed over

What changes the number

  • How many cylinders, including exit device and storefront cylinders
  • One key for all, or a master key system
  • Whether the locks share a keyway
  • Interchangeable cores
  • Cylinders too worn to rekey
  • Restricted keys that cannot be copied at a hardware store

Commercial rekey questions we get asked.

Rekey or replace the locks on my business?

Rekey when the locks are in good shape and the problem is the keys. Replace when a lock is worn, damaged, or wrong for the door. Our commercial lock replacement page covers the second case.

Can every commercial lock be rekeyed?

Most can: any lock with a standard pin cylinder, which covers nearly all lever locks, mortise locks, deadbolts and the cylinders on panic bars. Two kinds are different. Patented high-security cylinders are repinned only through the brand's authorized dealer. Cylinders too worn or damaged to work reliably with new pins are replaced, and the estimate says which. A keyless lock with no cylinder is not rekeyed; its codes are changed.

Can every door in my business be on one key?

Usually. If the locks share a keyway, we rekey them to one key; if some do not, we swap those cylinders. A master key system does more: one key for you, and each door on its own key for everyone else.

Do you rekey the cylinder on a panic bar?

Yes. Rim cylinders on exit devices and mortise cylinders on storefront doors are rekeyed with the rest, so no outside cylinder is left on an old key.

How long does a commercial rekey take?

It depends on the number of cylinders. A small office or store is usually one visit; a building on a master key system takes longer, and the estimate says how long.

Can I stop employees from copying the new keys?

Yes, with a restricted keyway: keys that hardware stores cannot cut, copied only through us. It is the way to know how many keys exist.
