What we do
The door is the part you pick out. Whether it still closes cleanly next August depends on the frame, the sill and the hinges, which is where we start.
Fiberglass, steel and wood, with or without sidelights. Prehung units set plumb, shimmed at every hinge and at the strike, and sealed at the sill so water runs out instead of under.
Bedroom, bathroom, closet and pantry doors, prehung or slab, hung so the latch catches without a shoulder. A slab is cut and bored to fit an old jamb when the jamb is still square, and replaced with a prehung unit when it is not.
A dragging aluminum slider replaced with a unit that glides, locks and seals, on a sill we check for the rot that hides under a leaking track.
The self-closing, fire-rated door between the garage and the kitchen, replaced with a unit that latches on its own and seals against fumes.
Full-view and retractable-screen storm doors on a frame that is actually square, so the closer works and the door neither slams nor hangs open.
Handlesets, deadbolts, smart locks and lever sets, bored and aligned so the bolt throws with two fingers. We rekey a new lock to your existing key if you want one key for the house.
How we work
The old door is the wrong thing to measure. Houses settle, sills rot under thresholds, and an opening half an inch out of square is why a new door binds at the top corner. We measure the opening at three points, check the sill and the framing beside it, and quote a door sized to what is actually there. If the sill has to come out, that is in the estimate, not a surprise on the day.
The hinge side goes plumb first. Every hinge and the strike get a shim behind them so the screws bite into framing, not air, and the reveal is checked all the way around before anything is fastened for good. Outside, the sill is bedded in sealant and the brickmold is caulked; inside, the gap is filled with low-expansion foam, because the regular kind bows the jamb and the door binds a week later.
Deadbolts and handlesets are bored and lined up with the strike so the bolt throws smoothly. The threshold is adjusted until the sweep drags evenly, the closer on a storm door is set so it latches without slamming, and interior doors are tested with the latch, not pushed shut. The old door, the frame and the packaging leave with us.

When the frame is square, solid and dry at the bottom, yes: a slab replacement is the cheaper job and we will say so. When the jamb is racked or the sill is soft, a slab hung in it binds within a season, and a prehung unit is the better spend. We check the frame before we quote the door.
Most single entry doors are done in a day, trim included. Interior doors go faster; a house full of them is usually a day or two. Widening an opening or replacing a rotted sill adds time, and it is in the estimate rather than discovered on the day.
Yes. Bring us the unit and we check it against the opening before installation day. If you have not bought one yet, ask us to size the opening first so you order the right door once.
Usually. We rekey the new lock to your existing key on the day, or rekey the whole house to one new key if you have just moved in and do not know who else has a copy of the old one.
A like-for-like replacement generally does not need one. Enlarging an opening or changing a structural header does. The rules differ by city and county, and we tell you which applies to your address before the work is scheduled.
Panel style, height and casing profile are the three things to match. We bring the door to the house so you can compare it in your own light before it is hung; a six-panel door beside five flat ones looks wrong however well it is hung.
